When My Number Was UP: A Six Sentence Story

It was exciting to take a helicopter ride over Alaskan glaciers; the view was stunning, and the sounds in the chopper were just like the sounds you hear in films and TV shows.

I couldn’t help but feel that the pilots for these tours had to ask themselves from time to time, “How many more of these are in me before something with me or my machine fails?”

They take tours up and over glaciers so often that the law of averages is against them each additional time they go up.

Still, that same rationale could be applied to private and commercial airplane flights, and, well, every time you go out on the road in your car or, as with me, my scooter.

My time came on September 25, 2024: my Vespa was totaled, and I now ride a bicycle when someone isn’t driving me around.

It’s a bitch to think this way; I guess that’s the only thing that doesn’t heal after the fractured ribs and a torn rotator cuff mend.

By his stripes we were healed (1 Peter 2:24), so I command your body to get the message (and also my ankle which I sprained last week – not as back as what happened to you, but I expect it to be completely recovered along with anything that happened to you – assuming the narrator of this tale telling the truth).

I remember having a Vespa many decades ago.

As a resident of the Great State of Alaska, I can tell you- that fear is not unfounded. We have the highest rate of fatal aviation accidents in the US- and only about 17% of the population. Excellently told.

Dude! At least you walked away*

(not for nothin’ but this Six brings to mind a line delivered by non other than Tom Waites (in ‘Rumble Fish’) “I got 35 summers left”

*paraphrase of the pithy saying about ‘a good landing is any you walk away from’

Oh my, sounds awful–injuries and doubt together. Please know I’m keeping you in my prayers, along with all bloggers I meet here.

I reckon there’s nothing safer than a pair of feet, assuming one looks both ways before stepping into it. Hope you recover quickly.

By the law of averages, we’ll all have a car crash or something, our own fault or someone hitting us, at some point. Most of the time, you work to avoid it and hope for the best.
