A Pinch Was Enough: A Six-Sentence Story

Skoal Long Cut Wintergreen smokeless tobacco can with warning about mouth cancer

There was a time when I tried smoking–it lasted one night. I woke up with what felt like a burnt mouth and a hangover; it was the first night I drank to excess, too. All I remember was burning through three packs of my parents’ Newports and draining much of their Bacardi.

A short time after that, the bad influence that got me drunk and encouraged me to smoke showed me his tin of Skoal. He took a pinch of the stuff that kind of looked like dirt and nestled it between the lower gum and the side of his mouth; after that he spent a lot of time spitting up what looked like mud. Because I was an impressionable lad, I had me a pinch, too, and I’m happy to report I never picked up the habit of smoking, drinking, and from the first try I never understood what people see in smokeless tobacco.

Am glad it went this way for you. I have been smoking since fourth/fifth grade just because of that… Wanting to fit in… Especially as I was not a popular kid… And am glad the tobacco now comes in pouches mostly… not loose like this…

Never could inhale cigarette smoke, but had a similar night with a Swisher Sweet that haunted me for days! No Skoal for me, thanks… watching the frat boys spit into a cafeteria glass they each carried around was too…off-putting. Ick!

That sounds like a great way to get rid of bad habits before they become habitual.

Yes, smoking was a social thing when I was in my teens. In my thirties I gave up cigarettes for cigars, cigars for a pipe, returned to three cigars a day which increased to ten over time and then gave the whole thing up. You did the right thing by only trying it once and having the brains to quit.

It never appealed to me, either. These things are best left alone.
