Red May Have Been Wrong: A Six-Sentence Story

When my youngest son got a job interview for a position at San Quentin Rehabilitation Center (i.e., prison), he had to buy some proper clothes: shirtsleeves, a couple of ties, slacks, and a new pair of dress shoes. Before he left for his interview in Marin County, he showed off his ensemble to his mother and me for a minute. He looked good, though we thought his shoes—two-tone wingtips–were a bit flashy for a State job interview.

We both thought the shoes wouldn’t be distracting since we agreed with what Red (Morgan Freeman) said in The Shawshank Redemption film. And yet, from the moment our son entered the prison, waited to be interviewed, was interviewed, given a tour of his prospective office, and escorted out of the prison, he had received no less than four compliments on his shoes! Red must have been wrong.

I wouldn’t notice, but Grandma would. Those of us who don’t, don’t, and those who do, notice everything else, too.

    Those shoes are very noticeable.
