The Avocado Toast Incident: A Six Sentence Story

Stephanie was on the other side of the coffee shop counter when she greeted Daniel with a bright smile. He always ordered a croissant, chocolate if available, along with a Cappuccino, but today, instead of a pastry, Daniel ordered avocado toast. Stephanie’s bright smile brightened even more as she remarked, “Good, I like to see you eating something healthy.”

Daniel blushed. He could name a few fellow workers who would have been offended by Stephanie’s remark, but Daniel, a lonely forty-year-old developer for the State of California, couldn’t help but be touched by Stephanie’s concern for his health—no one outside of his departed parents ever cared for his health.

Daniel continued to haunt his cafe, having his morning coffee there, but after the avocado toast incident, he started ordering lunch there too, hoping Stephanie would deliver his sandwich with that smile.

He might be pushing his luck or, he might one day be saying, “we first met over avocado toast.” Wouldn’t that be a fairytale ending.

It makes me sad that he had to cling to such an innocent statement like it might turn into something more. Poor guy.

I hope things work out for Daniel not necessarily with Stephanie.
