I love our rice cooker; it makes perfect rice every time, but my wife says it is a hassle to clean, but that doesn’t make any sense; she means it is a hassle to store and haul out when needed again, but clean-up is easier than scrubbing a saucepan—especially when I’m making (burning) the rice. My wife, now in her 60s, has been cooking since she was a teenager and has always used a saucepan.
When we first started dating, she had to teach me how to make rice (chop vegetables properly and bake potatoes, yams, and every other task in the kitchen), not to excuse myself, but growing up, the kitchen was my mother’s domain, and despite my progressive politics, I assumed it was women’s work.
When the rice cooker came along, I just didn’t get why my wife wouldn’t use it. I guess the real reason is that she had been using saucepans for over 40 years, and the pans are an arm’s length from the cooktop. I burnt rice so often that the rice cooker was a godsend.
We now have an air fryer, another convenient kitchen tool; I only need one of those robotic lawnmowers!
